Dong Xuan Market was established in 1889 by the French after filling in the Su Lai and Hong rivers. It is located in the center of Tong Xuan District, so the market is named Tong Xuan; next to it is Xuantian Temple on Su Hang Street, and on the other side is the White Horse Temple on Fan Hang Street . In the past, residents' trading activities were mainly conducted through waterways on river banks, docks and boats. As time went by, the sediment of the Suli River continued to accumulate, forming a mudflat. The French forced residents to do business here, and over time it became a market.

At that time, the trading activities in Dong Xuan Market were very convenient, especially after the French built the Long Bian Bridge. Due to the superior geographical location of land, waterways and railways, the trading activities here developed rapidly. In the early years, Dong Xuan Market used iron tiles and a total of five bridges. It was well ventilated so that customers did not have to suffer from wind, rain and heat. It also covered an area of more than 20,000 square meters. At that time, Dong Xuan Market was called Dong Xuan-Beiguo, and there was a road running through the middle of the market.

At present, the market has three floors, 73.5 meters wide and 130.5 meters long, including a trading area and a sales area. The North Market has been newly built on the original site that has been carefully renovated, retaining the original appearance of the main entrance of Dong Xuan Market. There are many stairs in the venue. The walkways are wide, with three walkways in the front, three walkways in the back, and two walkways on the side. In addition, there are two open-air stairs leading up to Dong Xuan-North Cross Market, 5 more ascending stairs and a modern elevator system. There is a cross-street overpass between Tong Xuan and Bei Guo markets, with fire guardrails and roadways around the entire market.

Do Xuan Thuy, general manager of Dong Xuan Joint Stock Company, said: "In the past, Dong Xuan Joint Stock Company was the management unit of the market and was responsible for maintaining and developing the Dong Xuan market, which has a strong flavor of Vietnam's traditional market.
