Temple of Literature (Vietnam’s first university)
The Temple of Literature-Guozijian is one of the richest and most diverse relics in Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam. It is located south of Thang Long Capital and is divided into two parts. The Temple of Literature is dedicated to Confucius, and the Imperial College is the first university in Vietnam's history. To this day, the Confucian Temple-Guozijian attracts thousands of domestic and foreign tourists every year. It is also a place for cultural activities such as the commendation meeting for outstanding students and the annual poetry meeting for the first lunar month.
The Temple of Literature was built in 1070 AD by Emperor Li Shengzong of Vietnam's Li Dynasty in Thang Long Capital (now Hanoi). In 1076, Emperor Li Renzong built the Imperial College behind the Confucian Temple. At first, it was only for the children of the emperor's relatives to study. In 1223, Emperor Chen of the Chen Dynasty renamed the Imperial College the Imperial College and gradually expanded the scope of enrollment to include children from the common people.
When talking about Confucian imperial examination education in Vietnam, we cannot fail to mention the Confucian Temple-Guozijian. Today, the Temple of Literature-Guozijian is a cultural and historical site in Vietnam. It is also a place where Vietnam promotes Vietnamese cultural values to international friends. It is also an educational base to promote the Vietnamese nation’s spiritual tradition of respecting teachers and respecting morality to the younger generation. (VNA/Ethnic and Mountain Pictorial)
